The vast Karoo is a semi-desert canvas central to the harmony and ecology of South Africa. It is here that the signs of the ages are documented in an archaeological archive of creation, the symbols etched in rock, meditative cave paintings and recorded in chapters of fossilized evolution. Sprawling across the interior the extent of the Karoo has been likened to a void. Comprising an endless plain of low lying ridges and infinite sky, some feel welcomed, others feel overwhelmed by the sense of nothingness. This is a place of absolutes. The presence of man flutters like hand drawings of wind-pumps, stoic farmhouses and expanses dotted with sheep. Barbed wire fences run like endless thoughts captured in the wind. This landscape teaches one to sense, it will not reveal, it will only be captured with an artist’s eye.
